When an MN receives an AP Beacon for the first time, it sends a registration request to the IN through the next hop to this IN. It then waits for the registration acknowledgement, after which it considered registered with the IN. The IN as well as the MN timeout their registration entries after the timeout period, which is the same for both of them. This timeout period is refreshed by different mechanisms at the IN and the MN:
- At IN: On the receipt of NU packets from the MN, the timeout period for the MN registration is refreshed.
- At MN: On the receipt of an AP Beacon from the IN, the timeout period for the IN entry is refreshed.
If an already registered MN finds a better IN, it can send a registration request to the new IN, which will inform the HA of the MN about the change.
